The Ontario Hockey League today announced the results of its investigation of an incident which occurred in a playoff game in Plymouth on the 17th of April, 1998, involving the Whalers and the visiting Guelph Storm Hockey Club. The incident in question involved player Jesse Boulerice of the Plymouth Whalers using his stick to strike the face of player Andrew Long of the Guelph Storm, resulting in facial and head injuries to player Long. A match penalty was assessed to player Boulerice as the result of the incident. The Commissioner of the Ontario Hockey League, David E. Branch, conducted an investigation into this incident. The review encompassed consideration of the referee's report, the game video for the game in question and a hearing conducted in Toronto, Ontario, on Thursday, April 30th, involving players Jesse Boulerice, Andrew Long and representatives from both the Plymouth Whalers and Guelph Storm along with other interested parties and the League Commissioner. In making his announcement as the result of his investigation, Commissioner Branch stated, "The injuries to player Andrew Long are substantial. "The League is of the opinion that player Jesse Boulerice used his stick in a most alarming and unacceptable fashion. "At no time can the League accept or condone such actions and it must be clearly understood that players at all times are accountable for their actions. The Ontario Hockey League views the illegal use of the stick as one of the most concerning areas of our game today and everyone in hockey must work together to eliminate this element from the game." It is the position of the Ontario Hockey League that player Jesse Boulerice is suspended for the entire 1998-99 hockey playing season to include all exhibition, regular season, and playoff games.
