Apple made a computer years ago that could be wound up, never took off. Also, you can buy small solar cells that plus via USB into phones such as the iPhone to recharge them.

Most people are on prepay/pay as you go plans. The charges are dirt cheap, less than a cent for a text message and 1-2c a minute for calls. but most people ring and hang up (called 'beeping') to let someone know they want to contact them, and that is for free.
