The navy has since changed the date and location: it never could have been the North Pole. They now say, perhaps August 1958. On August 11, 1958 the Skate surfaced near drift station Alpha. That's the most likely date and location for the photo. During the spring 1959 cruise they never found any substantial open water - they surfaced through ice at the pole.

The image of the USS Skate is taken in a 'polinear' these are holes in the sea ice formed by wind and currents they can be found in the sea ice of both the Arctic & Antarctic they were known even in the 50s subs used radar to find them. In the Arctic which is all sea ice, to claim the image of the Skate as any sort of proof for or against GW is as drkstrong said, fraud.
The Skate image is already being used by a number of denier sites as evidence against AGW and it simply is not.

@gorehamsteve Who said I got the info from Wiki - There are also several sites detailing the history of the Skate.
Antarcticice2:
Certainly it's evidence and no, it's not fraud. It is one of many thousands of pictures and studies that point out that, while we are in a warm period, we have had periods of the same or warmer temperatures in the recent geologic history.
Except for the last 30 years, atmospheric CO2 actually has a poor correlation with surface temperatures. Ocean currents and solar effects have a much stronger correlation then the 4 CO2 molecules in every 10,000 in the atmosphere.

Oops - the USS skate did indeed surface at the pole in March 1959 but the picture he shows is not from that time. Actual pictures taken during the visit to the north pole show it surrounded by thick ice (see Wikipedia "USS Skate") in other words he is a fraud.

Hi drkstrong:
Wikipedia does not tell the complete story. See NavSource on line.
The photo in the video was taken on March 17, 1959 of the Skate in open water at the North Pole. NavSource also shows the Skate at the Pole in 1962, after breaking through the ice. But there is another photo of the Skate and the Seadragon in August 1962, again at the Pole in open water. Indeed, Arctic ice comes and goes due to natural causes.
