Hobie 16 sails fast in 20 knots of wind, hanging out on the trapeze wire. Splash a glass of cold water in your face to get the full effect.

  • Wow...you guys are a couple of dorks. Oh, and who's minding the jib while you're trying to sound cool for the camera? You probably just learned the term "monohull" that day didn't you? P.S. How did you give a monohull an enema when you didn't come near one?

  • We are dorks, you monohull snob! The crew is minding the jib, fear not. That is one of the reasons we're going 20 knots...while you are on the couch watching TV. I own and sail a 25 foot monohull (a lot), and let me tell you, the Hobie is 3 times faster. Monohulls are fine...I use mine for slow sailing and eating cheese and drinking wine and camping. If you want to sail fat, get a catmaran, you ass.

  • great footagge of the captin lol your going like 11knots ..thats pretty fast still

  • Ha!! 11 knots...NOT. That's 18 knots easy. Hobie 16 goes 11 knots in a light breeze.

  • it's best to have both hulls out of the water by about 3 feet

  • love you guys. u remind me of me haha. im a "dork" too. ive been giving monoslugs enemas ever since i saw your video.. cats rock. i sold my hunter 34 and got a hobie 16. best decision ever.

  • I know this video was uploaded a while ago, but I'm in EG and I just finished my '73 hobie 16, is there anyplace to race around the bay?

  • Is'nt a Sydney harbour skiff a monohull? You'd be begging for it to end! Nice vid though. Check this one out! "Nokia 18 ft Skiff in heavy wind"

  • Dorks.

  • correction, mutihulls were banned, because the 33rd Americas Cup will be only multi hulls

  • :o lucky shit xD

  • Or just have a monohull and a cat like me.

  • Nice vid, bit grainy but you have captured the FUN!

I tried out a H16 a little while back, very impressed. The Guy who sailed with me was like WTF? as we were travelling pretty darn quick.

I find the only thing to watch is that lee ward bow, and not being scared to 'head up' if things get twitchy is not a bad idea...specially if the water is cold:)

  • Cats are a lot of fun, In fact I used to own a Hobie 16, but there are way better cats out there. I think I still prefer monohulls though because they can TAC.

  • The 1988 America's Cup was a travesty of sailing, the Americans were so desperate to regain the Old Mug that they had to resort to cheating to win - yes, cheating, they knew very clearly that the race was for single hull boats yet they entered a multihull.

Americans I worked with at the time said they were ashamed, the action had demeaned a classic event.
