He probably did not buy any armor except the gauntlets for visuals and the boots cuz of a mission. Ezio always did and always will look beter with less armor :D
In AC 2 , once you bought a armor piece it got equiped and no way of taking it down, in Brotherhood you could take everything off except the paudlrons tnx to a glitch with armor of brutus and mission repeat feature.

@Snowmass84 probably doesn't wanna wear armor for a bigger challenge...notice his gauntlets are the missaglias one.(the metal cestus gauntlet)

i only use smoke bombs if i have to,
i would just fight those guys, on the other hand, if they were brutes then i would use one
