Pathologic Gambling: 86% have gambled at least once. Less than 10% those who gamble develop a problem. 2.5-5 million Americans. Young people in particular, men, casino within 50mi. Senior citizens are gambling more due to boredom. Lotteries & casionos most common form. 50% have played lottery, 25% casinos. This is higher than compared to 1975. $0.5 Trillion wagered per year. DSM-IV defines persistent and recurrent maladaptive gambling behavior as 5 or more: Preoccupation; Increasing money to gamble to achieve desired excitement; Repeated unsuccessful to control, cut back, or stop gambling; Restless or irritable when trying to cut down or stop gambling; Gambles to escape from problems or mood;After losing money gambling, often returns another day to get even ("chasing" after one's losses)
; Lies to family members, therapist, or others to conceal the extent of involvement with gambling; Has committed illegal acts such as forgery, fraud, theft, or embezzlement to finance gambling; Has jeopardized or lost a significant relationship, job, or educational or career opportunity because of gambling; Relies on others to provide money to relieve a desperate financial situation caused by gambling
