In which I do a little demo/review of an infamous effects pedal, the DOD FX 13 Gonkulator Modulator. The Gonkulator is no longer produced but they appear occasionally on eBay.

The guitar I'm playing is a Squier Super-Sonic, made in Japan, a short-scale (24") instrument from the short-lived Vista series. It has in excellent shape except for some corroded pots, so some of the crackling you hear now and then is the sound of a volume pot that needs a good cleaning. The amplifier that I'm actually playing through is not the Peavey behind me but instead the Roland Cube Street just visible on the right side of the frame. The setting is clean (JC Chorus) with no other effects active.

Thanks to Loren Claypool for inspiring me to dig out this box, which was doing nothing but gathering dust.

  • Have you heard the band Gonkulator?

  • @GreenmanTalking no but I will have to look them up, thanks!

  • the dirt in this is actually nice, it's like a crisp fuzz box.

if you can find one cheap, get it.

the trick to a good sound is: find a good distortion setting, then dial in some ringmod.

it sounds nice with volume swells and delay...and also nice with reverse reverb.

  • @burntumber if you just like the distortion sound (and I do like it) you can get just that sound in the DOD Grunge pedal. I think it's the identical circuit and you don't get that background whine.

  • @paulrpotts Digitech makes the Grunge

  • @deandimedof thanks for the info. Apparently they are made now under the Digitech name. My Grunge pedals say DOD on them. If you look on eBay for "DOD Grunge" or "Digitech Grunge" you can find many of each. I have no idea if there are any real sound differences that go along with the brand change.

  • @nicbroox

Probably the only good use of a Gonk. I can't think of another.

  • combine this with some nice delay and you got LSD.

  • Nice demonstration, not sure I'd get one but I'm glad it exists!
