Two facts about the Piltvice Lakes region say it all. It is Croatias most popular tourist attraction. And, it is one of the rare natural locations that have been granted UNESCO World Heritage status. UNESCO declared it to be the worlds natural inheritance, attesting to the awesome beauty of this National Park. There are 16 lakes that are connected by a series of magnificent waterfalls. The highest is over 200 feet high! The lakes are situated in deep woodland, where many species of animals and birds abound. These animals are authentic to the region, having populated the woodlands since man first discovered it. So along with deer, bear, wolves and foxes, there are martens, hares, boar, eagle, owls and many more. Over 70 species of birds breed there. In other parts of the world, many of these species have been hunted almost to extinction, but in the Plitvice Lakes Natural Park they actively fill the same roles their ancestors did millennia ago. The National Park covers an area of over 186 square miles, and is perfect environment for those who seek to be enthralled by natures pristine beauty. Separated into an upper and lower cluster, the 16 lakes descend from an altitude of over 2000 feet to about 1700 feet, which is why many call it The Land of The Falling Lakes. The lakes themselves cover an area of over 5 miles. There are many trails for those who love hiking, or who want to find a secluded spot for picnicking. In winter the frozen falls are magnificently stunning icy displays. In the summer the lush greenery is a perfect setting for exploring natures bountiful variety of woods and fauna.
