In regards to shooting someone during a home invasion: it depends on the state you live in and its laws. In the great state of FL, you CAN LAWFULLY use deadly force against any person who uses any amount of force to enter a home or car uninvited. FL law states that the person who is lawfully within the conveyance or vehicle automatically fears their life is in imminent danger and that person cannot be charged with a crime. So, for all you 'give em a second chancers', Ill see you on the news.

Being reasonable means you don't unload a full clip into a person or use exotic types of ammo. If you confront an unarmed intruder in your home and you are armed give him a second or two to decide whether he wants to live or die. Hopefully he will leave. If you do have to shoot, you shoot to kill. A shot in the back can appear to a grand jury the person was trying to leave your home. Being reasonable can help you better cope with the guilt of taking a person's life if it does become necessary.

Having a dog MAY help, but a lot of criminals have figured out how to circumvent them. The normal family fido is not going to aggressively protect your home or you.
