Another look at my version of the spiral magnet rotor/motor inspired by Rod's wankel spiral motor. This view has some other stuff in it but it's pretty much long on the tooth lolololo. Tried some video editing stuff. Real MacGyver looking.....

  • Oh and as for the spark, a nice big schottky diode in parallel with the coil (reverse polarity, i.e. anode to negative side of coil, cathode to positive side) will sort that out.

  • @matt9741399 Thanks Matt. I've long since gone away from this build and have started another but the information is still useful thanks.

  • change out the reed switch and use a photo optic interruptor with a chopper wheel. Use this to trigger your circuit.

  • Self cooling - You could possibly use a car intercooler mounted above the spinning part, add fan blades onto the arms and use the cooled water to cool down the electro magnet. This would be an efficient way of increasing the longevity of the coil however, it would increase drag on the arm unless the blades were properly designed.

  • Why don't you just switch your coil with a transistor and give the reed switch an easier life?
