Configuring Windows 7 as NFS Server for XTreamer

NFS may perform much better than CIFS (Windows sharing protocol), especially when concerning Win to Unix / Linux connectivity. Following many questions on NFS configuration for XTreamer I decided to help by producing this clip, It shows how easy it is to configure the NFS shares on Windows 7 and later on watching the content on Xtreamer itself. As Windows 7 sharing is a bit different and may become a bit complex, I find the NFS superior as it does not involve any registry changes to allow XTreamer to communicate with the PC, it performs very well and administered quite easily. The software I am using (haneWin NFS) is not a free of charge one, but perhaps there are other free alternatives.

I'm able to stream 1080p contents over 802.11n using this protocol (NFS). On the same network streaming the same content using SMB (windows share) fails.. that's why I made up this video. hope it helps.

It's nice to see that you converyed my post on the Xtreamer forum "NFS How to and Tip" to a video. But you forgot a very important thing. In Hanewin on the NFS tab, you should fill in 32768 as maximum NFS transfer size. You forgot that in your tutorial. Now the maximum size will be Hanewin's default of 8192. It's the same as a normal network with two pc's with two network cards, where one (Xtreamer) is set to 100 mbit and the other (Hanewin) is set to 10 mbit. The speed will be the lowest one.

Regarding the inability to use UDP, I'm not sure why this happens for you, only thing i can think of is the windows firewall (which should be disabled in your home protected LAN in my opinion)

@meni19722 Sorry I tried to send you IM, but it was returned. The NFS Server i downloaded from the same URL as in your video is only a 30 day evaluation version. Your Vid' is 2 years old. So it seems things have changed. I don't buy stuff off the Net because of the worry of having my credit card details stolen. Thanks for your wanting to help, but I think I'll abandon the whole thing.

@ludvan67 In the newer versions the PC setup with hanewin NFS will remain exactly the same. Without the need to log into the xtreamer web-interface as the 2.x firmware will be able to scan your network and discover your newly configured NFS share.

This cannot affect your current way of working with the device, playing off from local USB or HDD will always work for you.

@meni19722 Thank you I forgot about this. In the video it's a different Xteamer to mine. Mine is Xtreamer Pro. Are his instructions compatible to my machine? It looks very complicated, if I mess it up will it affect the basic working of my Xtreamer, that is I just load stuff onto the Hard Drive or USB memory stick, and watch on my TV.

@lang666 The communication in this case is on the LAN only, no ports needs to be configured / opened on the router's NAT configuration

@lang666 that would depend on how good your wifi connection is..

if it's poor, re-transmitting a package will take longer time
