While I was waiting for another train to come through, I thought I'd show the new HT I got for railfanning.

It's a Vertex VX-150 2 meter Ham Transciever, that works great for also monitoring the railroad band.

I don't have a ham license, but I do plan on getting my license soon.

This was just a quick review while I was waiting - I will post up some more audio and a more detailed review soon.

edit: Update
I passed the element 2 (technican's) exam on 1/26/10! Just waiting for the FCC to assign me my callsign.

  • I plan to pick up an ft-250r soon myself, the only problem is these can't receive EOTD blips can they?

  • @NorfKhazad No usually the EOT's are on UHF - 457.9375.

  • Great vid. I have mostly Motorola and Kenwoods, but am seriously considering a ft250 for dedicated railfanning as i get back to trackside. For those wanting to upgrade, do not hesitate, these are built on a commecial radio platform. Audio is great.

  • I have a VX-170 for my ham radio commnuications and a Radio Shack Pro 82 (with a 2M/70CM/27 MHz BNC antenna) for railroad monitoring.

146.49 and146.565 are 2 good 2 Meter frequencies for ham radio operators to coordinate their train spotting efforts.

Ironically I had a VX 150 and traded it for a Pro 94, which I hardly ever use.

  • @HDTrainVids and you can communicate on MURS freqs which you do not need a license to communicate on.

  • can you listen to cop frequencies with that?

  • Railways use Motorola.

  • I have the exact same radio with the FNB-64 700 mAh Ni-Cd battery pack and the standard NC-72B 'wall-wart' charger. My question is, how long should I charge the battery? The manual does not state how long to keep it on the charger. Thanks!

  • I got 4 of them in the last 5 years they are great radios I got my last 2 right before they stopped selling them. I got 2 for ham radio and 2 for railfanning if u can find one grab it they r great radios for railfanning and ham radio!
