April 1996

It's carnival time! The people are swaying to their drumbeats, marching on a wave of music through the streets of Brazil.

But life isn't always so harmonious. For Black Brazilians the battle against apartheid is only just beginning. Though slavery was abolished 107 years ago, power still rests with the fair skinned. A decade ago, the Olodum movement took black culture and black music to the carnival for the first time. Other movements have developed like the Ax'e group which rescues abandoned children from the streets. At the refuge they can play football, free from drugs, violence and the police. In dilapidated shanty towns, people are questioning their inferior status. As children splash in the muddy water, parents are rejecting the white Brazilian ideal promoted by the mass media. Maria de Lourdes from the Unified Black Movement concludes, "we Negroes need to become conscious of our situation, but Brazilian society needs to change too."

  • @Crazyman1212 NOT AT ALL!! In fact, we all celebrate white pride every year...(columbus day, 4th July, Thanksgiving, etc.) NOBODY SEEMS TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT, SO DONT TRIP ABOUT BLACKS BEING PROUD TO BE BLACK.

  • @ZaydelZamirah Did you also know that there is no AP African history or AP African American history class? An explanation for this by an official was that it may actually convince students that their history matters. (-_-) so none of that history is important but learning European history, Chinese history, and even Latin American history is? Smh yeah but we get it all huh? Lol

  • @dangar45 We don't use the term "aryan" because of its conotation. I suppose around 15%-25% are brazilian whites are not mixed, it is far from true all white brazilians are mixed.

  • @kwamemali Thats fine, but it doesn't mean you have to hate other races.

  • @kwamemali Shut up, we brazilians are not racist scum like you.

  • @ukusapillage yeah, right, the black people are the cause of the problems of the world... I'm sarcastic.

And no, Brasil, will not "broke", black people are the most respectful people I know (more then white), and their are beautiful, with a beautiful culture. And here we use a phrase to say why Brasil will not Broke:

"I am Brasilian, and I not quit. EVER!"

And shit to your racist comments.

    From a Brasilian white guy.

  • to the racist people around the world: I'm brazilian, and here exist only one thing that separate us from the rest of the world, is miscigenation. No one here can say 'I'm totally white" or "I'm totally black". EVERYONE HERE IS MIXED, EVEN THE "WHITE" PEOPLE!

I'm white, my mother is white, my father is brown, my grandmother is black, my grandfather is german descendent, my grandgrandmother is native indian...

that my friends, it's what makes our country different.

    P.S.: correct my spell, please

  • @mikebeozonte

Thanks. I want to live in Brasilia. A mental healthy country, without leftist/liberal absurds. Moreover, a good climate, beautiful beaches, pretty girls... :) Greetings again!

  • @mikebeozonte you people are a CANCER to the world

  • @kwamemali LOL

  • @religiofob Blacks are a cancer in any country. Now we are forced to host thousands of Immigrant coming from Haiti, the result is an increase in crime, and remembering that they are proliferating like cockroaches.
