  • My father has had a fever and shaking chill every morning since going on warfarin.

  • Fever and chills are side effects of Warfarin, but he mechanism if how this happens is not known. It is also listed as a "rare side effect". Being though that I have seen a number of reports of this from different people I believe it is a lot more common than is being stated. The problem is that unlike with herbs and supplements there is no mandatory reporting of adverse events on pharmaceutical drugs, which makes them appear much safer than they really are.

  • @Hveragerthi Thank you for the reply! He's pretty apprehensive about the warfarin, considering that it's basically a rat poison... However, with a clot in his superior vena cava, there isn't much of an alternative. I think the shaking chills and low grade fever isn't too rare of a side effect. From what I've read online, and my father just chatting with people in doctors' offices, it seems pretty common.

  • Actually there are several alternatives. Keep in mind that Warfarin (Coumadin) does not break down blood clots, it only prevents them. Fibrinolytics not only prevent blood clots, but they also break down existing blood clots. My personal favorite is the herb dan shen (red sage root), not to be confused with dang shen. Another great option is the enzyme nattokinase, which is easier to find. And these will not increase the risk of stroke or break down tissues like Warfarin.

  • Vitamin K actually blocks vitamin K epoxide reductase, which lowers vitamin k levels. Vitamin K also plays other roles in the body other than blood clotting including maintaining bone strength and vascular health.

  • @Hveragerthi Thanks, I'll definitely look into that! He's been doing bad, the dr claims it's not from the Warfarin, but he only has those symptoms while on it... fever, chills, fatigue, low blood pressure.

  • i thought coumadin just blocked vitamin K. That is why you are told not to eat a lot of green leafy vegetables. and i have never had a problem with brusing easily although a bruse will be bigger than that of a person not on coumadin i take coumadin for a mechanical heart valve. good vid
