You could use a clutch of some sort, the simplest being two sheaves and a v belt. You can also change the gear ratio (technically speaking, mechanical advantage) to increase either top end or bottom end torque depending on whether you use a little sheave (you probably know them as pulley wheels) on the engine or on the final drive wheel.

u can find crapped out ones behind lawn mower shops. but thats only for me becuz the mechanics here are dumbasses. threw out 2 good weed eaters
