THE MAKING OF RIVER is the first video work Eiko & Koma are creating as a part of the Retrospective Project. Often produced in collaboration with environmental groups and park officials, RIVER is an outdoor work Eiko & Koma performed in nine different sites. RIVER usually takes place in a body of moving water, and the journey downstream suggests the passage of life and time. This video follows Eiko & Koma from the rehearsals in the Catskills to the performances in the Delaware River and the American Dance Festival. In the framework of Retrospective Project, we are wondering if and how a newly edited and contextualized video work can give access to a performance art project that happened some time ago. We are interested in sharing our work and process including those who have not seen us perform.
