  • Beautiful! Combines reason with emotion, a difficult and wondrous accomplishment. NC

  • Thanks NC, I've accomplished what I set out to do!

  • Humanism puts humans as being of primary importance, and views human capabilities as our only way of understanding reality; we need no scripture or deity. Humanism stands in contrast to theistic (believing in a supernatural god) supernaturalism. It replaces supernatural things with, well, very "human" things. Have you checked out Unitarian Universalists? They might be your "thing". If not, just plain monotheism.

  • I agree with 90% of humanist's views. I just need to know why a belief in a higher power cannot coexist with a belief in humanism? I don't believe in religion but I'm not an atheist. My views of what God is is not the same as most people who are religious but I still believe. Can I still consider myself a humanist of sorts?

  • @cocoa8872 Only just caught your comment. I believe we are all unique with differing views depending on probably our upbringing - I would say myself that it is imposible to know the answers, we simply have not got the brain capacity - just like a goldfish in a bowl trying to understand how a TV works ...it will never know! ....we will never know .....I think....

  • @edgemasterrobin It seems that you watch too much tv. Though I also like watching nature stuff we must remember that TV is 99% drama.

You only emphasize the similarities while common sense would see the great differences in humans and animals. Animals may show emotion, so what? It is instinct. Animals also eat each other. They don't have a conscience or any guilt about what they do.

The golden rule is good, but it is not enough. There must be higher laws to hold us all accountable.

  • @edgemasterrobin I am not advocating a "God did it" viewpoint of creation. I believe the historical record according to Genesis.

I agree there seems to be lots of evidence for your viewpoint, but it is made to fit the belief system you already have. I can do the same thing for every discovery also. You see what you want to see. The phylogenetic tree is not a good tool to falsify your "science" because it is based upon your false assumptions (circular). Bad ruler.

Feel free to email me further.

  • @edgemasterrobin

Also, I noticed that you used the words "just happen".

Interesting. I don't think humans are intelligent by chance. You apparently do. You believe in something that you have never seen just as I do. Your magic is time and chance create intelligent self replicating life and I believe that it would be impossible for that to take place because it is something that no one has ever observed. That is not scientific just as my beliefs are not scientifically verifiable.

  • @edgemasterrobin

I agree with you that morality is universal because we all know how we want to be treated and that gives the basis for how we should treat others. But I don't see animals doing this.

Animals do not have any responsibility and cannot be judged by any law because they don't know this universal law to which we are referring. However, we assume that no matter where a person grew up he is capable of reason and thus is held by the rule of law.

we both need spell check. -concious?

  • How does morality exist without God?

    Men are more than animals.

Animals do not mete out justice or show mercy, love, hate, reason, create etc.

    Please don't consider yourselves animals.

God has to be involved somehow along the line whether you believe in evolution or whatever. Something or someone intellegent and good must have gotten involved for life to exist the way it does.

  • You can believe in a higher power and still be a humanist... but you can't follow an organised religion and be a humanist - that's what's contradictory. ;)

  • Humanism is a Mental Health

  • i don't belief their should be any tension as I srnce by some of the comments humanism and what faith gives to others is in the end compassion and itegrity why do you people worry abouth and attack those who have a view a bit different than humanism I do not believe that matters if one beliefs values comes from religion what really matters is that one has morality, values, compassion, the whole point is to help others ans be kind don't frustate yourself with meaningles triflfes
