"My baby was the last thing that I thought about until I pulled that needle out of my arm." Sharon, drug user.

How do we deal with parents who are drug addicts or alcoholics? Do we just accept the dangers they pose? Is it enough to rely on rehabilitation services and monitoring? Or as a last resort should the authorities step in? How many chances should they get before they forfeit their rights to be parents? There are no easy answers. ABC's Four Corners gets an insight in an emotional journey with the children of drug addicts and alcoholics, and parents who risk loosing them.

  • nature? there is no nature left in a human life. We live in a carefully organised and policed hell. We might as well stop pretending there are any real freedoms or "natural" rights.

  • Those women have no maternal instinct whatsoever..how can you inject yourself with speed KNOWING that there is a life growing inside of you??

    Total degradation.

  • we need to regulate procreation

  • @Straylight100 "act against WHAT THEY KNOW to be their better interest", i doubt that these indiduals know anything better than living in a total drug iduced fog. Addiction is a disease, but i still firmly believe that people who are addicts, are weak minded and not ready to face the problems of the real world, instead, looking for an escape.

  • Ronwin Bishop is a fucking monster.

  • @sekretutka

When your brain has been trained to accept that massive rushes of dopamine everyday are normal, if you stop that you will literally experience the closest thing to hell on earth. I guess that's what over-rides thatg motherly instinct.

  • @sekretutka So true mate,im a recovering drug addict who has seen the raw side to this story. Even though Im pro life and pro human rights some people should plain and simple be castrated!! if you can't take care of yourself how can you take care of another? More to the point what are the parents thinking having unprotected sex with needle users? If thats the start you get in life? Your already half way to being a drug addict before youve taken your first breath!! Booze is as bad/worse!!

  • g'day drug addicts

  • @scumgod13

The thing is though, often state appointed care is worse.

You have to do it on a case by case basis, and only remove the child as a last resort when they're faced with actual danger.

You can't just go taking ex-junky's children because they're economic situation is poor.

  • I see pregnant women and women with little children walking into the methadone clinic ALL the time. There's heaps of them. The children are just going to grow up and become hooked as well. There are even stories of babies being born who are addicted and go through withdrawals once outside the womb because they're no longer nourished with opiate filled blood from the placenta.

  • Shame the soundtrack on this posting sounds pissed. :(

  • all this means is that the baby either grows up without parents or a parent, and they are braught into a world of drugs, GREAT FUCKEN INFLUENCE having these parents
