Otimi at centre of Maori licence scam

Police have a stern warning for two groups of Maori in Waikato and Auckland, found producing Maori driver's licences.

A Hamilton man presented one to police when he was stopped yesterday he was arrested and will appear in court on Friday.

Police say thousands more have been given the licences, and those who are making them claim it is within the law.

Already known to police for selling homemade passports, Gerrard Otimi is the driving force behind the document.

He has organised driver training lessons every Saturday, where the learner drivers are given a Maori drivers licence.

If you look at the standard driver's licence that is issued by the LTSA, it hasnt got the Maori flag on it, says Otimi.

If Maori are there, they are a sovereign people, an indigenous people to this country. Why do they have to have that other flag?

Otimi says the documents are legitimate under the Te Ture Whenua Maori Land Act.

The licence will fit into any situation because its no different from you going to church and getting confirmed, there is no difference because all its saying is youre capable of driving a vehicle, he says.

Otimi is not the only one producing the licences. Te Akaimapuhia Maori Land Incorporation, who claim to have started a native police service, say they have also given out more than 2000 documents they call Maori travellers permits.

The documents have been presented at least twice in the last two days. The first was in Hamilton when a man presented it to police when he was pulled over. Police say he presented false information and now faces disqualification from driving.

In the second case, a woman claims New Zealand Post accepted her Maori driver's licence as identification.

Police have issued a written warning saying people knowingly using these documents need to realise they face serious consequences.

People that are duped into paying for passports, residency permits or drivers licences have been taken advantage of, and should contact police.

Otimi says more licences are likely to circulate as other hapu groups start producing their own.
