@ashish96ps3 I call it the Roy Lopez.. This pronunciation difference is minor compared to some other very annoying ones, also hes Irish so you aint got Nuttin him bitch ;D
-
Nice mate. Cheers mate.
-
ruy lopez is pronounced as "rai lopez not "rui lopez"
-
It has stood the test of time as it is a 'novel' mate. All sub 20 mates require co-op from the opponent, does anyone on this forum have a checkmate names after them, it is very easy to be wise a posteri.

@HappyFamily383 If black takes the Queen, it will work, but if he recaptures with the knight, white can't capture bishop with the Queen and loses the knight with no compensation.
-
Can't you directly take the pawn with your knight instead of waiting for h3?
-
@Sherigami AKA stabbing your opponent in the eye with his own Bishop while screaming "Checkmate, checkmate"?
Too obvious. When someone offers up a queen for slaughter like that you know a trap is being set.

@Nomoreidsleft
By the time the queen is offered, black has already fallen into the trap.

@SeanGGodley Black can move knight @ g8 to f6 without taking the queen and the black's bishop continues to guard the king.

Then Nxc6 and white has a big advantage. Bxd1? loses a piece after Nxd8.

@SeanGGodley Yes, then it's game on! But, I wouldn't say that white is at advantage, since his queen is now locked up, which black's queen is free to move. All I'm saying is that being so obvious a trap, any player worth playing would not fall into it. A decent player should always look at what's attacking their king, when an opportunity to take a queen is presented. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

@Nomoreidsleft
Sure, it's game on, but white has a big advantage - about +1.5 according to Fritz, so with correct play it's almost certainly a win. It might seem convenient for this debate - but I beat a strong club player with this trap in the Czech Republic a few years ago - and mated him! It's certainly worth knowing, in any case - it's a pattern that crops up occasionally, even playing with the black pieces sometimes. Generally of course it is only good for blitz and bullet. Cheers,
Sean
