Charger is a seven-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever who really lives up to his name! He loves "charging" through the surf and is most at home in any body of water. These pictures are of him swimming and romping in a cool North Georgia lake, just outside of Helen, GA. Charger lives in Atlanta, Georgia, but was born in Pungoteague, Virginia on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake breed is one of only a few breeds to originate in America, the story goes that in 1807 there was a shipwreck - the English vessel's crew and two dogs survived the wreck and landed on the shores near Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. These two dogs were St. John's water dogs, which were then cross-bred with Curly Coated Retrievers, Irish Water Spaniels, several setter breeds, and coonhounds - all in an attempt to achieve the ideal cold-water duck hunting dog. The dogs that descended from these two original shipwreck survivors ultimately became collectively known as Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.
