This is a topic that is new to me so I will only be touching the surface of the many aspects of accessibility and usability for people who are blind and visually impaired in libraries, mostly pertaining to the United States. To begin with I tried to make my presentation accommodating to those with visual impairments by keeping the font large and graphics minimal. Although it is commonly assumed that the proliferation of research through the web has enabled more access for people with visual disabilities, this is not always the case.
I would like to start by discussing what being blind or visually impaired means and some background on disability legislation in the United States. I will then cover a few of the ways that libraries can ensure that their technology is accessible and usable to people who are blind or visually impaired.
