UPLAND, Ind. -- Laughter really was the best medicine for the University of Saint Francis at halftime on Saturday.
After Kevin Donley and his Cougars had a good laugh about one of the wackiest quarters in USF history, the visitors outscored Taylor University 32-0 in the second half and won 46-14 on Don Wheeler Memorial Stadium. Nei
"We really did laugh about that first quarter at halftime," Donley said. "That's the wackiest 15 minutes of football I have ever been a part of." Brandon Almond recovered a TU fumble on the kickoff, so USF had the ball at the Trojans' 10-yard line just 10 seconds into the game. But on third and 6, USF quarterback Justin Boser was picked off and Luke Currens dashed 80 yards for the touchdown. Austin Coleman got those points back in about 12 seconds when he took the kickoff 81 yards for a record-setting fourth career TD.
Justin Juarez picked off a Nick Freeman pass setting USF up at the TU 25. The Trojans forced a USF field-goal attempt, but a bad snap wrecked that plan and when holder Kollin Carman tried a shovel pass, Nick Gillette picked it off and scored a 72-yard TD.
Ha ha ha.
After a 23-yard Andre Turner KO return, USF scored in a more conventional way grinding 5 plays in 52 yards in just 2;06, Emerson Ueber kicking his second extra point with 6:35 to play in the quarter. Neither team scored again in the half.
Boser, who three three interceptions in the first half, watched from the sidelines late in the half.
"Coach D and I talked at halftime," Boser said. "He helped calm me down and alleviated an concerns I had regarding confidence."
Boser didn't throw another INT in the game while connecting on 7-of-9 second half passes for 182 yards including a 72-yard TD pass to Coleman. Emerson gave USF the lead for good kicking a 29-yard field goal with 13:32 to play in the third quarter. Boser connected with Coleman at 8:48 and on another ill-fated extra-point attempt, Carman passed to Jake Allen after a bad snap for the 2-point conversion making a spectacular snag. USF led 25-14.
The Cougars added 21 points in the fourth quarter on a Boser to Aaron Bettcher 14-yard TD, a Juarez interception and touchdown of 30 yards and a 2-yard Garrett Harvey plunge. Juarez tied a single-game record with his third INT, his first for a TD.
The win gave USF a 3-2 Mid-States Football Association Mideast League record and a 7-2 overall record. TU slips to 2-3 in the MSFA MEL, 4-5 overall.
USF will celebrate 'Senior Day' next Saturday before taking on Central State (OH) at noon.
