Rosie and I went out to a local park to pick some hazelnuts that had fallen from the tree. They're turkish Hazel trees, which explains the spidery husks. The nut shells are quite hard, so as a result they're not cultivated commercially, but the root stem is often used for grafting commercially grown cultivars hazel onto, as it doesn't sucker. However if you make the effort the nut is quite tasty - I'd say it has more flavour than the common cob nut. The trees are quite hardy, decorative and can grow anywhere which is why they are often used in urban landscaping, like this park. (Thanks wiki) We picked some elderberries, wild apples and blackberries that day and I used the hazelnuts to make a killer crumble. It was truly the business. Oh and that's me on the piano too.
