Introducing 2011 NHL draft prospect Sven Bärtschi.

As an 18 year old rookie for the Portland Winterhawks, the Swiss star scored 85 points (35 goals) in 66 games mostly playing behind the line of Ryan Johansen, Brad Ross and countrymen Nino Niederreiter. He developed an amazing chemistry with linemate and fellow 2011 draft eligible prospect Ty Rattie.

Bärtschi's plays an intelligent veteran-style game and is seemingly one of the best players in his age group in transition and in odd man situations. A Rattie-Bartschi 2 on 1 is automatic and deadly for their opponents . He thrives in this situation due to his impressive release, equally deft passing and strong skating. His speed is high end but his edge work is perhaps a better asset due to his size and willingness to go to the net, thus eluding checkers and getting to open ice.

He's a smaller and older than many of the players projected to go in the 1st round, but his complete game will ultimately land him in the first round come June in Minnesota as he looks like a very safe pick.

He compares to other NHLers like Matt Cullen, Cory Stillman and Patrick Elias.

  • thumbs up if you're watching this after his sick 2 goal game in the young stars tourney!

  • I have the weird feeling that this guy could make the roster next season with calgary even if hes small. Theres some rookies that suprise you jumping soon in the NHL by going under the radar (a bit like Skinner did) and he might be the one. I mean if hes doing the job in the training camp, why not? He could follow Niederreiter and Johansen in the WHL playoffs and we already see both of them going in the NHL soon.

  • Welcome to the Flames! Nice shot and amazing passer

  • I am Winterhawks season ticket holder and watching Bartschi last year was worth the price of the tickets alone. This kid knows where to be on the offensive end at all times and doesn't kill you on the defensive end either. He flat out comes to play. Nice pick Flames.

  • Just the kind of rookie the Flames need. Can't wait till he's part of the main lineup. :)

  • I don't want to get flames fans too excited but I'm a CAPS fan and I watched kootenay last year to see if cody eakin was nhl ready which I think he is. When kootenay played portland and this guy bartschi was playing bartschi stole the show. This guy is ligit he may be a steal! Portland did lose but this guy was incredible that's why he really stood out

  • the flames will finally see some exiting young talent in a long time!!!!

  • nothing like making a sports montage with a song about a kid shooting his dad and a bunch of kids at a mall...

  • Speaking of chemistry, it's too bad Rattie wasn't there when we picked in the second. They've got chemistry in spades together.

  • This kid will be the steal of the Draft. His character alone makes him a sure thing, he is fast and has a lot of skill offensively. Great for the flames, Sutter would of probably traded this pick for some but plug, go Feaster!
