Here's an interview clip featuring Astronaut James A. Lovell, Jr. (Apollo 8 & 13) discussing what he said when the Apollo 8 crew left the moon's orbit in December of 1968. Their voyage was the first time mankind had left the earth's orbit and entered the moon's. The crew entered the moon's orbit only hours before Christmas and read from the book of Genesis on their final pass. Upon leaving the moon's orbit, James A. Lovell remarked "Houston, please be informed there is a Santa Claus". In this clip he explains the sequence of events that led to that famous quote.
Mr. Lovell appeared in the documentary film, "Discovering Deerpath", which covers the amazing 150 year history of the town of Lake Forest, IL. The Special Edition DVD features additional bonus interviews from Mr. Lovell and several other prominent Lake Foresters. This Special Edition DVD is now available at Amazon.com and other retail outlets.
When Jim Lovell said that there is a Santa Claus, he meant that they got a 'gift' because the main engine worked, and they would be able to come home. I can't believe the people that took this literally! They must have an awfully low IQ.
