I just got one today, but it too has the issue with the backpack. Actually, mine is more loose than yours by the looks of it. I've seen another review in the Tformers forum that stated the same thing.
I agree with your assessment on the vehicle mode; I totally prefer this over the microscope, and I'm a G1-era dude too!
