@Rib5 Elton's 1976 band was Davey Johnstone and Caleb Quaye (guitars), Kenny Passarelli (bass), Roger Pope (drums), Ray Cooper (percussion), James Newton-Howard (keyboards). I'm not sure about the backing vocalists.
@pbrick6301 Except that Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics, and he's heterosexual. Elton has certainly sung romantic and even sexually-driven lyrics about women before. In turn, Bernie has written songs that are either gender-neutral or gay-friendly lyrics for Elton as well.
