There is a difference between being "mad at God" and not putting up with the presumptious, "righteous" anger of devout religious humans. The Religious Right leaders are power-brokers first, and I'm not on their team if they won't at least listen to my side's opinion.

  • Since Christians should believe in the word of God, they have such absolutes in the commandments on how to live their lives.

So is it rather because you disagree with Gods law?

Something must have been seriously wrong with the church that kicked you out at the age of 9 for being disabled! But to blame God for peoples miss doings would seem unreasonable in my opinion.

I guess we should all remain 'free thinkers' as long as it doesnt prevent us from finding the truth :)

  • And remember-- since we are individuals and not mindless robots, each person's truth is different.

  • What if a self professing Freethinker said: Since my boss is so rich and I hardly can pay my monthly bills, its ok for me to steal his new laptop or Look at that fat kid over there, its hes own fault so lets go tease him.

    - I mean, some people actually seem to have that mentality, right?

Do you think the World would be a better place if everyone was Freethinkers?

Do you think the World would be a better place if everyone lived according to the moral and physical laws of the Bible?

  • Then there is the self-promoting "Christian", Fred Phelps, who spends most of his time picketing funerals and spreading his opinion that "God hates Fags, Fag Enablers, Jews, Democrats, Liberals, and (this is a hot one) America". God hates America-- and Phelps still lives here.

You are a freethinker in your own way; you are free to think that God is the right way to go, for *you*.

Since everybody has free will, other ways would be hard to enforce.

  • @Obletix The title for the documentary is 'The hero's adventure' -Power Of Myth'

  • @Obletix It IS indeed a leap of faith to believe the impossible tales in that bible you claim contains truth, including Jesus raising people from the dead and then doing the same himself! If you had read 'Power Of Myth' ..I think we could discuss it further, and yes Campbell's book is a man-made construct about the many myths mankind has made up from the beginning and how it inspires human beings through the ages. In fact you can watch some of the documentary on YouTube....

  • @Obletix I became a christian many years ago by close friends who led me in that direction, it was from reading the bible itself that I came to winder how I or ANYONE can believe the stories in that book! -It wasn't long after I became an atheist. The bible is mythological, there is no way that talking snakes, thousands of people being fed with 1 basket of bread and fish, and eve being made from a rib can be anything but nonsense. BTW- I used some of Jesus philosophies as 1 example...

  • @Lennon4ever1 Did you become a Christian by conviction from hearing/reading the Bible? I confirm that we are in disagreement, since the Bible Does contain the truth. How do you determine that only the peaceful philosophies of Jesus, are the good bits / truth?

If you dismiss religion because of it being a man made construct, why do you regard a book of Campbell more reliable?

  • @Lennon4ever1 That would be foolish of Jefferson according to Revelation 22:19 etc... You claim to seek truth, yet you like the idea of excluding a supernatural explanation from the start. I don’t know how you draw your line of reasoning.

I am convinced by Jesus authority and how his words confirm/conform to the realities of the world as I experience it. Since this is the case, I also trust what Jesus teaches on matters that might seem harsh compared to our standards.

  • @Lennon4ever1 This book does not diminish the trustworthiness of the Bible. When Campbell on page 50- makes the impression that similarities between Genesis and creation stories of other religions, should make the Bible less trustworthy, it is obvious that he is not seeking truth.

Similarities between Genesis and other creation stories is just as strong an argument for the Truth of the Genesis account. But these other religions fail in so many other ways compared to the Bible.

  • @Obletix I suggest to you to read The Power Of Myth -Joseph Campbell

  • @Obletix Thomas Jefferson wanted to edit the bible down to a much smaller book containing only the peaceful philosophies of Jesus and remove all of the supernatural content. I feel that would have been a good idea to this day, even though there are things Jesus said I do not agree with.

  • @Obletix I've read the bible thank you, having been a christian now turned atheist. I'm afraid we're not in agreement if you don't realize the bible IS based on myth, fear and superstition! There are of course good bits in the bible such as the golden rule and other peaceful philosophies of Jesus and such, but as a whole I fully reject it and feel it has been corrupted by nonsense. It IS a man-made construct just like all other religions.

  • @Lennon4ever1 I agree that honest reasoning without corrupt superstition and fear, will allow truth to be found. May I suggest reading the Bible.
