Any manual radio slave or sync cord should be used at 1/125th or slower shutter speed on a focal plane shutter, as a general rule of thumb.(Some cameras' maximum sync are very slightly faster and some much older cameras are 1/60.) Only the built-in electronic high-speed sync capabilities in Canon and Nikon cameras allow for focal plane shutter sync at all speeds.
What I wish he had said is that the maxium synch speed is only 160th of a second with the Canon EOS 40D and 580 EX and EX II flashes. I really needed 250th sync and it just cannot do it.
