Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2[8] (previously marketed as simply Modern Warfare 2[9]) is a first-person shooter video game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Officially announced on February 11, 2009,[10] the game was released worldwide on November 10, 2009.[3] It is the sixth installment of the Call of Duty series,[11] and the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, continuing along the same storyline.[10][12]

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was released in conjunction with two other Call of Duty games: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized for the Nintendo DS,[13] and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Reflex, a port of Call of Duty 4 adapted by Treyarch for the Wii console.[14] In addition, a comic book series based on one of the game's characters will also be produced, entitled Modern Warfare 2: Ghost.[15] The developer has stated that the game's proprietary IW 4.0 game engine is an improvement over the engine used in its previous game.[16]
In response to questions about the length of the single-player campaign, Infinity Ward CCO Jason West stated that Modern Warfare 2 would not be longer than the 6-10 hour-long campaign of Call of Duty 4.[17] Mission settings in the game will include Russia, a military base in Kazakhstan, a desert area in Afghanistan, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.[12][18] A trailer released on the official Infinity Ward YouTube page teased fighting at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., although it is unknown if the game will feature fighting in that setting.[19] New features include the ability to dual wield handguns.[20]
