10-08-2008 Construction has begun for the railway line between Beijing and ShiJiaZhuang in northern Hebei Province. The new link stretching over 281 kilometers will be part of an existing network connecting Beijing, Guangzhou and the Hong Kong SAR.
Construction is jointly funded by the Ministry of Railway, the Beijing municipality and Hebei's provincial government. Costs are estimated to hit around 44 billion yuan, and the Beijing-Shijiazhuang line is expected to be fully operational within four years.
With speeds set to hit as high as 350 kilometers per hour, the new line should slash the journey time by half, to less than an hour.
