I read about it on several occasions researching Buddhist history. He was quite clear that he did not like religions and what they did. He was a kings son and he saw what the religions where doing to the existing beliefs, and how, in their nature they were designed to be corrupted. He was very sad to see it already happening by the end of his life.
It's sad... the Buddha, on his death bed, begged for this not to happen: for his teachings not to be turned into a religion. Man with his good intentions will always look to control others with what they believe is right: will do what they do.

ADVICE TO ANYONE WHO IS THINKING OF TAKING UP BUDDISM!
Every human is born with dignity! And you have the right to keep that. Don't end up walking the streets of Asia barefoot, begging for food, and kissing the feet of monks!
First they will tell monkhood is not necessary. But eventually they will tell to reach the mythical enlightment u have to become one
There is a purpose of our lives! Islam is the only way for success in the life after death. Look past the negative stereotypes
Hey mate, I only just realised the equaniminity or contented mind we are looking for here, its just not going up and down like mmmm food get excited eat to full fart looking for more food generally we call that happiness, but being content is lasting happiness and this is what grows, so maybe practice contentment ? Maybe you know more than myself!
@deathtobill5 What tradition of meditation are you interested in?

Thank you.
