This is the Planes of Fame Museum's (Chino, California) Soviet WWII Yak-3 fighter. The assembly of this new-build airframe was recently completed (2011) by Tom Camp. This aircraft carries an Allison V-1710 12-cylinder engine instead of the original Soviet Klimov. The Yak-3 is quite small compared to US WWII fighters and it weighs only about 4,700 lbs (empty weight) as opposed to the empty weights of the P-51 (7,600 lbs), the p-47 (10,000 lbs) and the p-38 (13,000 lbs). This gives the Yak a quite high power-to-weight ratio!

  • My favorite inline fighter and a vastly under appreciated aircraft. To me it looks better than a spitfire, I wish somebody would drop a Merlin in one of THESE and see what it could do. :)

  • This plane is on this month's calendar at work!

  • A real beauty !! Thought we'll never see one again !! Great job !!

And what a real beauty with it's Normandie-Niémen livery (^^)

  • I never knew there was a YAK3 flyable.

  • Lovely sound there's nothing better than the sound of a WW2 fighter. I have a bottle opener that makes that sound every time I crack one open! Sweeeeeet!!!!!!!!!!

  • @7GolfAlpha

Sometimes they tak the radial engine Yak 11(two seats) and convert it with inline engines (e.g. allisons) back into Yak 3 (single seat) standard.

  • Nice video. It is a joy to see and hear such a rare bird!

  • Didn't this Yak-3 have a Klimov when they first moved it to Chino?

  • hot little ship
