I only shoot the surplus ammo in my rifle that I use for fun, and I can already see the barrel starting to deteriorate from the condition it was in when I bought it. I've had my 'fun' rifle for about 3 years and I can see 'specks' in the rifling

I shoot the retail ammo in my very nice M59 Mosin Nagant Carbine

  • Corrosive ammo generally isn't a big deal. Just clean your gun. It doesn't instantly cause damage, but if you LEAVE it in the gun, over time, it can corrode.

Don't be afraid to use surplus ammo. It reminds me of people that own 4 x 4 trucks. Some own trucks just for show (and don't want to take the truck off road and get it dirty) and others buy a truck because its MADE to go off road, so they don't care if it gets dirty. Mosin's were made to shoot surplus, A LOT! just clean them!

  • @romansten9 - I had a Mosin that I never cleaned, and the barrel is totally pitted out, it def does eat away, the Mosin barrels are bare metal anyway, no chroming or anything

  • When shooting surplus I think a lot of the extra crap in the barrel comes from the bullet sealant being burned on to the bore, that crap is certainly harder to remove.

  • @314299 - I need to make a Mosin barrel squeegee or something... its so true...

  • Where did you get the common ammo for 40 cents a round...and is it bi metal? Because every box of 20 rounds I can find that is after market is like 25 dollars!

  • @alazz912 - and the brown bear is bi-metal - the only rounds for 54r that really aren't bi-metal are the Winchester, Priv Match, Wolf Match, and S&B and those are all, yes, over a buck a piece!

  • @drycreamer yeah, I agree with you (and like I said in my earlier message) they have to be cleaned. But proper care of a Mosin that shoots corrosive ammo will be a gun that is every bit as good as one that shoots non-corrosive.

  • just but bulk ammo and with the money you save you can but 2 more rifles.

  • some windex and a few patches...its fine....been kickin ass for 70 years...no problems yet...soak her in 3in1 oil and shoot the crap out of her....keep her wet and clean...she'll never complain...thats how every military designs their guns...loose as a goose to run like a SBC.

The oil catches the crud...wipe it out and clean it after a day at range...she wont complain.

  • My Russian surplus ammo was not that bad.

  • With the military surplus rifles the cosmaline used in preserving the rifel can be absorbed into the mtal. Then when you put a few rounds through it and the metal heats up the absorbed cosmaline is released. But overall corrosive ammo is just that .. Corrosive. Great video. Theres my 2 cents.

  • @drycreamer man i go through 80 to 100 rounds.. mine wasnt that dirty.. and i cleaned it again couple days ago and was fine
