He was crying because after being stabbed he developed a narcotics addiction and Benton was persuading him to go to rehab, and then Carter hit Benton only to start sobbing becaue he realized that Benton was right and he needed to get help before he ended up like his cousin who O.D.'d and was brain damaged.
