"Orrin Keepnews, Producer." Chapter 13 features the 1956 Riverside recording by Thelonious Monk, "Brilliant Corners," with Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Clark Terry and Oscar Pettiford.

One of the most respected of all jazz producers, Orrin Keepnews's long and productive career has included working with such artists as Sonny Rollins, Bill Evans, Wes Montgomery, Cannonball Adderley and Thelonious Monk, as well as founding influential jazz labels Riverside and Milestone.

Brilliant Corners is a 1957 album byThelonious Monk. It was his third album for the Riverside label and the first, for this label, to include his own compositions. The complex title track required over a dozen takes in the studio, and is considered one of his most difficult compositions. In 2003, it was one of fifty recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.
Because of its historical significance the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.[2]
The track Pannonica is named for Pannonica de Koenigswarter, a close friend of Monk's.

It hasn't gone anywhere. Critics and ivory-tower intellectuals have tried to play this con game that Jazz is dead, I think because living Jazz is beyond their control. As long as they can convince us what Jazz is, they take the power away from the master musicians who create it. But I think that Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Pat Metheny, Cassandra Wilson, Joe Lovano and many others completely disprove this. Jazz is alive and well, and STILL evolving.

I don't think YouTube advertisements would have been in Monk's control.

I’ve got some suggestions. First of all, check out Dizzy if you want Big Band jazz. Then Miles Davis for some conceptual jazz. Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain are two good ones. Also check out Alice Coltrane. Ornette Coleman and Eric Dolphy are on the wilder side of jazz (if that’s what you’re into), and then finally there’s Sun Ra, a very interesting guy, not sure if its jazz or not, but definitely worth a look.

pick up the book "The Jazz Standards: a Guide To Repertoire." It covers most of the tunes people play today, and provides the info to find several recordings per song. Pretty awesome
