Narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, the PBS broadcast coincides with the 50th anniversary of Stax and the relaunch of the label by Concord Music Group.
One of the longest-running performing arts anthologies on television, the award-winning GREAT PERFORMANCES series presents the best in music, dance and theater. The series is a production of Thirteen/WNET New York and funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Endowment for the Arts, public television viewers, and PBS. I think Motown had more and better artists overall but Stax had that rawness to it's sound and artists. Mainly because of Otis & Isaac. Motown was like the Beatles in their beginning period with tight suits and clean hair, Stax was like the later Beatles period with experiment, exciting feeling and wildness. Both great labels.
