Maryland Correctional Enterprises highlighted Flag Day 2011 by showcasing War of 1812 replica flags now being made to fly over state buildings in MD. The original 1812 Flag was raised over Fort McHenry the morning of Sept. 14, 1814, and signaled the American victory over the British in the Battle of Baltimore, according to a Smithsonian account. Watching the flag inspired Key to write "The Star Spangled Banner."

Offenders in the MCE Sew Plant create more than 700 MD and US flags at the MD Correctional Instituion for Women each year for public and non-profit entities. MCE offers job opportunites throughout MD institutions to improve employability upon release.
