Red Box came to the attention of the world with their debut single "Chenko" on Cherry Red Records in 1983. The band soon signed to WEA Records and the band hit the upper reaches of the charts with their 2nd single 'Lean On Me'.

The band enjoyed further single chart success and released two albums, 'The Circle & The Square' and 'Motive'. Red Box should've enjoyed lasting success but the band's output stopped there until the re-recorded version of 'Lean On Me' was made available through iTunes by the band in 2007. The band's influence is still evident today with many fan websites created to celebrate the band's music. Here Simon Toulson-Clarke tells the story of the band to Matt Bristow

  • what a great interview, always liked red box, they were pop but with their own individual style.nice to see them still about today.

  • Brilliant band. Brought the album when it first came out. Now have it on vinyl. Trying to get the second album. Should of been bigger.

  • I have both of the albums on vinyl. The way these guys used world music, yet made it contemporary was/is amazing. Their feel for melody is absolutely incredible!! Seriously incredible!!! Simon comes over very well, here. A really down to earth, intelligent guy. In case you haven't figured it yet, i love Red Box. Lol! It's sad really, cuz although they did have success, they should've been fuckin' HUGE!! Respect is due, ppl... \m/ (:o)

  • A very interesting interview. It's a shame the record company lost sight of what the band were wanting to do on The Circle and The Square. I bought it when it came out (I was one of the 70,000) and bought it again recently when it was released on CD. Still stands the test of time, for me anyway, some great songs.
