On May 15, 2009, my brother Thomas and I drove to Anacortes to go whale watching. We sailed with the Island Adventures crew, who were amazingly dedicated, knowledgeable and just fun to hang around with. We found J-Pod, the first of the three local pods (J, K, and L) to arrive in our area for the season. The matriarch, Grannie, is estimated to be 95. The largest male in the pod is her son, age 57, named Ruffles for his ruffly dorsal fin. There is also a baby in the pod named Echo.
