SIGNAL-TO-NOISE-RATIO
POEM BY ERIC HEATH PRENDERGAST

Mastering the language
of silence
was something Michael had done
from very young.

In place of

... Hello.
(day-to-day spells and rituals)
... Thank you.
(eight seconds before sunrise)
... I'm sorry.
(suck up to fuck ups)
,,, I love you.
(please die soon)

It was a versatile lexicon.

With the poetry of silence,
mellifluous,
he would craft perfect lyrics
and set them to a grimoire.
of long pauses.
Things left unsaid.
Hush.

To break the still.
Shatter stone.
Rise Elijah,
discarding face
for fire --

But voices crack.
A hymn, broken.
Screams in the wilderness
swallowed by sky.

Keep to the streams,
subterranean.
Drowning is
the most tranquil of deaths.
