yiddish song. Images FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.
"Aaron Lebedeff - the Maurice Chevalier of the Yiddish stage - was one of the top song-and-dance men of the Yiddish theater. He was born in White Russia and moved to New York in 1920. A star of the Second Avenue theater district for 16 straight seasons, his exuberant delivery of this sort of material is considered to be without peer. Ever adorned in a straw hat and impeccably tailored clothing, the dapper Lebedeff had a youthful appearance that lasted well into his 60s. He penned many of his own songs both in English and Yiddish. His Yiddish lyrics were so idiomatic that one reviewer said they "virtually defied translation. . . with a humor that is difficult to render into English.""

"Aaron Lebedeff scored an immediate personal success at Boris Tomashefskys National Theatre after he arrived in NYC in 1920. Born in White Russia, he learned his craft in a local choir, a traveling Russian theater troupe, and Yiddish theatrical troupes. Lebedeff wrote many of his Yiddish and English lyrics himself. All of the songs breathe nostalgia and are evocative of the Russian-Romanian milieu and the immigrant world in New York."

  • Is that Paul Michael Glaser?

  • @poitrenaud

    yes, in his younger years

  • Can anyone tell me what is the melody which starts 5:17 when the song is finished? I would like to know author and title. It's really beautiful :)

  • It is an instrumental yidish song by

Mickey Katz. I will try to remember the

title and will post it here.

  • Oy s'iz a mechaye! Thanks for the post. I love Lebedev's voice and singing. His most famous song is of course is 'Tsen kopikes hob ich', but every one of his song is a beauty, including this one.

  • I´m happy you liked it. If you noticed both the song by Lebedeff and the movie FIDDLER

ON THE ROOF have a common theme intermarriage.

I always thought the signature song of Aaron

    Lebedeff was Rumania, Rumania.

  • Anything Yiddish is beautiful. It is the most expressive language in the world. All Jewish women are beautiful and smart. Long live the Jewish people.

  • Listening to Lebedeff sing "Rumania" is better than 5 cans of red bull.

  • Ich mag dieses Lied/ I like this song.

  • @Kroolova It's a traditional melody which is sung in the synagogue on the holiday of Simchat Torah, possibly modified by Mickey Katz or someone. No, it didn't originate with Mickey.

  • @Rottwhaler82 I undestand what you mean. we have the same thing in france.

  • I'm French, and I love this! God bless this wonderful culture-

And, screw the stereotypes. I was never tought the Jews were anything other than another human being.

Now, the arabs are not proving to be such good neighbours; are they? Tell me the truth? Not the party line. Okey?
