I'm sorry for not actually speaking a lot about my asexuality, romantic orientation and stuff like that. I hope to go into more detail in future videos.

For the hearing-impaired (or something):

Hello. So as you can see we are a group spearheading a new channel called The Dapper Ace, and to start out we are doing introductory videos. I guess in this video, I will introduce myself. My name is Erik, but I'm widely known the ace community as Henny. I've actually decided to write a crappy poem, so listen closely now.

My nickname is Henny
I am nineteen years old
Let's spread asexuality
All over the world

That's about it for today. See you next week!

Just kidding. Well, as you and probably tell from my accent, English is not my native language. It is indeed the glorious Swedish language. I guess I'll be the token non-anglophone of the team. And maybe it proves to be charming, though I believe I cannot match the utmost cuteness of Danny or Kyle when it comes to accents. Oh well.

Why did I decide to join this team? I believe it is a question which cannot be fully answered unless I try to cover some of the background of me becoming interested in asexuality. Originally, a bit more than two years ago, I decided to join AVEN. The events surrounding my joining are a bit foggy in my head, but presumably I joined because I suspected I was asexual and needed more information. Anyway, it didn't take all that long before I was well-versed in the whole asexuality thing. The basics of asexuality are not that difficult, you know. Information is not why I stayed and became a moderator.

I'm going to a bit meta and speak not of asexuality. Instead, I'm going to speak about the asexual community. It should be noted that I don't speak solely of AVEN, but rather the collective aces of the interwebs, so to speak. I have never seen such a collection of really cool, nice and genuinely friendly people. I have made a lot of friends in these circles. I just want to say you guys mean a great deal to me.

I have this thing called asperger's syndrome. I don't see it as a disease; it is part of who I am. But it really does make life a pain in the ass sometimes. For one thing, I have a great difficulty communicating with people. I also get so really tired around people too. My strategy of coping with that, when I was younger, was to become even more isolated, go misanthropic. I took pride in being alone. But as I became more into the asexual community it started to dawn upon me that I was stuck in this destructive circle, and in the end that the easiest way to deal with the problem was not necessarily the best one.

That's one of the reasons why I'm here today, why I decided to stick around. Another big reason is of course asexuality itself. It's really a simple concept, yet it has been very controversial. It has taught me a lot of things, and I'm sure many others as well. What's most important about it is that is the word can suddenly show us a group of people that weren't there before. Outright violence on aces might be very uncommon, but being invisible sure as hell sucks too. If asexuality is to establish a place within the world, it is important that aces speak loud and clear about their existence. Just one person by themselves might not make a big deal, but it will make a good example to others, and make them more comfortable about calling themselves asexual, and before you know it asexuality is a wide-spread concept. That's part of what motivates me.

Right. To attempt to speak a little bit more about myself, I'm currently in my last year of upper secondary school, and hopefully I'll go on to university after that. My interests revolve a lot around browsing the web. I'm very talented at procrastination, so much I decided to name my blog procrastination embodied. I do like reading, though I think I should try to read more. What do I like to read, you ask?

[shows Multitude]

If you're going to read one book on globalization, read this one.

[shows Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy]

That's the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in Swedish.

[shows Vodka]

I really do love my cats. Unfortunately I can only show you this one, the other one is out somewhere. This is Vodka, and he's a really shy and cowardly cat. The other in is called Guinness, because he has a darker fur.

[shows diamond ace card]

The real cool kids do it diamond ace style.

Well, now the video is over for real. I hope to make Wednesday your favourite day of the week. Thank you for watching.

  • Awww, it's so nice to see you on video, Henny! Don't worry about your accent, it's fine. Also, since you're so nice as to provide a transcription, you know there's a thing somewhere on youtube that lets you put in a running transcription that shows at the bottom, right? Anyway, I look forward to future videos. Much love! - Divalady

  • @MusicLoverGurl I wasn't aware of that function. I'll have to look into it. Thank you for pointing it out, and for the feedback. =)
