However the territories in question were acquired in 1967, wherein Israel launched a surprise attack on Egypt in what they called a "preemptive strike". Preemptive strikes are not considered an act of self-defense, because it allows the aggressor to assume an imminent attack from the other side without proof. They are only deemed legal with the approval of the UNSC. See UN charter for details.
