Yep, I once met a BHPA 'pilot' (who as it happens is 'High' in the BHPA) at a CAA Airspace meeting in Inverness several years ago...
It turned out that this 'expert pilot' had in fact not had a SINGLE flight in the previous year & a half...
I've lost count of the number of BHPA pilots (including coaches & instructors!) who I've seen struggle to launch in conditions I would regard as easy..
It's intresting when we meet Pilots who come out with statements like "i've been flying 20 yrs" then you watch them fly and they can't fly for toffee. I find I ask myself "so how much flying have you actually done in that time???" Number of years flying has no reflection on skill where as numbers of hrs flown per year does if you get my meaning. He may have been flying for 20 years but if he only does 5 hours per year, that time really means nothing.
I see a pilot who has been flying for about 20 years (based on what he told me when chatting)... who has quite clearly NOT done any training with me... fail to launch.... One of the reasons being (as you mentioned) the amount of brakes pulled (along with a number of other issues)
