Another comment: One of the standout moments of the 2010 games was in the final workout. Out comes Jason Khalipa, in gloves! Helped him right out the gate since up first was pushups on the baking hot black mats. He was the smartest man in the room, and he knew that if the gloves ever impeded on a workout he could always TAKE THEM OFF. I look at hand protection much like I look at lifting shoes, wrist wraps, and compression pants. All external tools to be used at the right time for max effect.
I think every regional competitor should head over to newgrip.com/crossfit.html for a pair. You're not there to prove your pain tolerance or your hand conditioning, you're there to win. And if ripping up your hands hurts your chances either in the pullup workout or on workouts later, you should try to avoid it. You've worked too hard all season to be derailed by pride and some missing skin. Training is the time to make your conditioning better, competing is the time to play to win.
gloves compromise your grip going from barbell to pullup bar then to kettlebell. crossfit athletes rather condition their hands and just bear the pain.
