In modern times, it started with the Patriot Act. A brilliant naming of a law in direct opposition to it's nomer. Someone was a student of Herr Goebbel's Handbook On Propaganda. Now, the next step is being pursued, the ability to declare a threat at any time, real or imagined, and invoke Martial Law, for an unlimited duration. Does anyone besides the GOP want America to be The Fourth Reich? I know I don't, I hate Nazis! Isn't that the main reason WW2 was fought, to stop the Nazis?

You've got to love her--and be grateful for the one representative who has dared to speak out time and again for civil liberties, against the death penalty, and against our country's persistent warmongering. She was the only representative to vote against the 2001 Authorization of Military Force Against Terrorists because, as she rightly argued, it granted far too broad powers to the executive. We need 200 Barbara Lees in the House.
