This video shows an old Mac iBook Clamshell G3 PowerPC brought back to life with Linux MintPPC 9.2, which is built on top of Debian 6. As the video shows, this iBook runs fairly well and is still usable for simple tasks like browsing the Internet, word processing, and playing games. While this iBook is not super-fast, it can be a great backup computer or to be used by kids in the household. So many school systems purchased these iBooks years ago and they could save a lot of money by still using them and other older computers for students to do simple tasks.

  • Can i install from USB? Cause I broke my cd drive on my PowerBook G4 :p

  • @ALSVofficial I have never tried to install Linux from the USB on a Power PC, so I do not know. There is a website called PenDriveLinux that specializes in ways to install various distros with USBs, and you might find an answer to your question there. Best wishes!

  • Hey can you upload the .iso of this LMPPC9.2 to mediafire and share the link?

  • @sweetasiansugar At mintppc.org, you will find the iso from the most recent version, which is 11. I have not tried version 11 yet, but it appears to have a simplified installation compared to version 9.2. I hope to try it soon. As far as uploading to mediafire, my recommendation would be to request it from Linuxopjemac, who created MintPPC. Best wishes and enjoy!

  • Please please please post more videos of this mintppc ibook, performance wise- how well it browses the net, opens applications etc. I wonder for instance if a SSD would improve performance even more.

  • @imixmuan This MintPPC iBook does quite well with basic tasks such as word processing, playing simple games, and browsing the Internet as long as I avoid the more graphically demanding websites. Originally it had 64 MB of RAM and I added 128 more to give it a total of 192 MB, which really helped with performance. I am sure you are right that going to an SSD instead of the hard drive would also give it a boost. Thank you for the comment and I will post more videos soon.

  • Ok found out myself but this video was really good, if not great! Make more! I subbed :)

  • Try installing Icewm and XXXterm web browwer(webkit) from Sid repositories. Just switch to Sid in /etc/apt/sources.list to install those apps, then come back to stable .

  • Wow, I actually have a first generation iBook too. The battery is dead but technically it still works. no one is using it I should give this a try. Nice work.

  • Btw, even when you logout of the LXDE session and switch over to Gnome, things still run quite smoothly as, let's say if you were to run OS X 10.3.9 on an iMac G3/233, which isn't bad....... not stellar.... but not bad.

  • I love MintPPC compared to all the other distributions of Linux I've tried for the PowerPC platform. But that being said, it is very hard/increasingly hard to find device/peripheral drivers for the PowerPC, regardless of one's choice of distro (distribution).

  • Thanks for your reply. I've owned two ibook clamshells in the past, both 466 Paris models, and I can definitely say the more RAM you have the better. Don't know how often you visit the mintPPC forum but today there was great news, the developer has got Linux Mint 11 LXDE on top of Debian Wheezy working with a ISO installer! This means no more command line installs in the future...YEAH!!!
