The Avoca Beach Theatre.. a real treasure!

The Avoca beach Theatre is a delightful single screen cinema on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia. It is famous for it's charm, it's art house movies, and for its seaside garden setting .

The sea, the ever breaking waves, are just a stone's throw away. Sometimes, during a quiet film, the murmur of the surf mixes with the sound track on the screen. One night, years ago, a penguin walked in through the back door. This very special Theatre recently won first prize as the Best Regional Cinema in NSW. I think it's the most charming cinema in all of Australia.

The theatre is famous for its festivals, opera movies and all sorts of community based special events. it has a very good web site and newsletter which can be found under, Avoca beach Picture theatre.

Great promotion for a lovely little movie theatre! The British poet Philip Larkin once wrote: "The impulse to preserve lies at the bottom of all art."  Like Larkin, you cherish that which has intangible value beyond measure. In a world of economic rationalism where the past gets paved over with parking lots, we need artists to respond to this impulse to preserve and protect places where cultural & community life flourishes. May the Avoca Beach Theatre thrive & continue to delight its patrons!

I saw Ace Ventura Pet Detective for the first time at this cinema way back in 1994... it sucked then, and it still sicks now (the movie that is).

I've been going there for years when I come to Avoca and it's always special. Where else can you walk off the beach barefoot and into the movies? Great that it's preserved. Thanks for the tribute, Mike

This is a delightful historical record of great showmanship and a unique cinema experience that is very different from the prevailing impersonal multiplex dreariness. It's a miracle that this cinema has survived, so all congratulations are due to the people who run and keep it alive. All power to them.

How charming! It's lovely to see what life is like in Avoca, which is very far from my part of the globe. And the theatre really is a gem. I'm a bit envious, but also delighted to have participated in your culture down under, if only for a few precious moments.

I posted this again as I still feel the same way, and regard it as most bizarre that anyone should want to have this film removed for reasons of privacy. However, Mike appears to have addressed these now, so hopefully the film will stay up permanently.
